Abstract:
The Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Staff, analytic agencies supporting the Service staffs, and military educational institutions support the defense planning, programming, and budgeting process with a variety of automated decision aids. Based on a survey of these organizations, we conclude that currently used decision aids cover Special Operations Forces SOF missions inadequately Counterterrorism is not covered. Special reconnaissance is partially covered by some models, except that beach reconnaissance is only scripted. Direct action is partially covered by some models, except that recovery of personnel and material is not covered. Unconventional warfare is not covered. Foreign internal defense is partially covered by two models offering extremely different perspectives.
