The U.S. Army is working on reducing the possibility of human health effects from exposure to the decontaminating solution DS-2. One of the components of the DS-2 mixture, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether EGME, has been determined to cause birth defects, fetotoxicity, and bone marrow problems in laboratory animals. The proposed formulation DS-2P replaces EGME with propylene glycol monomethyl ether. This report provides initial environmental screening results using Daphnia magna, fathead minnow, Photobacterium phosphoreum, and earthworm.
