Abstract:

In recent years, a number of powerful, flexible, modelling tools for the assessment and exploitation of propagation conditions have become available. Rapid advances in mimi and microcomputer technology have put complex models with sophisticated user interfaces as the disposal of the non-specialist user. These range from system design tools to near real-time operational and tactical decision aids that include models and databases of the necessary environmental parameters. Prediction tools are required for communications, radar and navigation applications, and cover the frequency spectrum from ELF to optical. The lecture will concentrate on the prediction tools, but will also cover the background required to understand the models used. The emphasis will be on frequencies from HF to optical. Topics will include the ionosphere, ground wave propagation, terrain diffraction, refractive effects, hydrometeors, atmospheric gases, electro-optics and the sensing of radiometeorological parameters. Both empiricalstatistical system planning methods, and more theoretically based deterministic operational decision aids will be covered.
