Abstract:

This document will detail a method for calculating the radiation interaction effects between active transducers in an array, commonly known as the radiation impedance, using variational methods. A brief review of previous treatments of the radiation impedance for single mode and multimode transducers will be given. These interaction treatments will be modified, using the variational principle, to yield expressions for the self and mutual radiation impedance which do not require exact solutions for the surface pressure of the radiator. Specific calculations of the self and mutual impedances for baffled pistons and flexural disks will be presented and compared with previous theoretical treatments. The extension of these variational expressions to flextensional transducers will be briefly discussed.
