Abstract:

Energy cost of field operations has been as yet mainly predicted rather than measured accurately. We assessed the energetic status of soldiers exposed to intense physical activities and cold weather. Subjects performing routine field maneuver under conditions of 0 to 12 degrees C. 75-100 RH were followed up for 12 days. Energy expenditure EE was measured by the doubly labelled water technique, after a single, oral dosing of water. Energy intake EI was assessed from detailed food records filled up at real time and analyzed by computerized food charts. Energy balance was calculated as the difference between EI and EE for each subject
