Abstract:

We have imaged the interface between a two-dimensional molecular gas and a two-dimensional molecular solid using a low temperature ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope. The solid consists of benzene molecules strongly bound to step edges on Cu111 surface. Benzene molecules on the Cu111 terraces move freely as a two-dimensional gas at 77K. We observe exchange between the two phases at the interface and the transient occupation of well defined sites at this interface. On mesas of the Cu surface, the two-dimensional gas is held in a cage of the solid as in a two-dimensional nanometer scale gas bulb
