This report examines the political, ideological, and geopolitical building blocks of Russias future military doctrine. It provides an overview of internal and external security challenges to Russias national security interests in Europe and Asia explains the connection between Russias internal crisis and the future direction of its national security policy and military doctrine and outlines alternative solutions to its current crisis and national security challenges. The report concludes with summary implications for U.S. policy. This report was prepared as part of the project titled After the Warsaw Pact. The Transformation of Military Policy and Security Environment in Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union. It should be of interest to analysts and policymakers concerned with Russias future military doctrine. The report was completed in February 1994.
