GAO examined the process the military services use to staff overseas medical facilities and the adequacy of access to care at 6 overseas military hospitals and in 9 specialty care areas. It interviewed about 200 medical providers, including more than 90 department heads, and obtained documentation on waiting times for routine and emergency care and laboratory results. GAOs testimony focuses on access to medical care problems at the overseas military medical facilities it visited, the primary causes for these problems, and options the military services should consider in addressing the problems.
