Abstract:
A research group was developed to pursue basic and clinical research in immunology with emphasis on AIDS. Appropriate space within the Guthrie Research Institute was renovated and equipped and investigators were recruited to occupy these facilities. The research laboratories are occupied by Drs. Henderson, Noti and Kestler, while a clinical research laboratory was also developed. The basic research laboratories are investigating the pathogenesis of AIDS with emphasis on viral entryfusion receptor molecules expressed on human cells, the regulation of expression of human integrin genes, and expression of regions of the HIV envelope genes by recombinant means for functional studies. The clinical laboratory has made available numerous tests for leukocyte function, immunosuppression and evaluation of HIV status. The basic research program has identified human cellular proteins that appear to play. a direct role in HIV entryfusion and is beginning to clone the genes which encode these proteins, has developed recombinant HIV envelope protein that contains cellular interaction domains and plays a role in pathogenesis of HIV disease and has identified important regulatory domains of the 5 sequences of the integrin gene pl5095.
