Magnesium batteries were analyzed to determine their hazardous waste characteristics under United States environmental regulations. The batteries were subjected to the hazardous waste criteria under 49 CFR 261 for ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity and toxicity. Extraction Procedure Toxicity EP Tox method was used to determine toxicity. Under these regulations and methods magnesium batteries are not listed as hazardous waste, nor were they found to have any characteristics identifying them as a hazardous waste.
