This essay has two objectives to demonstrate the importance of analyzing and understanding the multiple, contradictory forces at work domestically and abroad and their potential impact on U.S. policies, and to underscore the need for the U.S. to focus its priorities and adapt its policies -- without sacrificing Americas distinctive blend of power and principle -- to fit the changed circumstances of today.
