Abstract:

The fall of the Berlin Wall, collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic USSR, and dissolution of the Eastern Bloc Warsaw Pact ended 45 years of cold war. As a result of this new world order, long repressed tensions have begun to resurface, and many groups are taking the opportunity to assert themselves, whether to establish long dreamed-of homelands, reassert ethnic or tribal control over ancestral lands, or reincorporate by force neighboring states separated by colonial rule. The United States and the world community have been compelled repeatedly to take action, sometimes on moral grounds, to protect our own economic and political interest as was the case in the Persian Gulf and currently going on in Bosnia.
