Abstract:
In this Phase I SBIR research we proved the feasibility of a software solution to provide intelligent tutoring. Because students often learn best by example, we designed a tutoring system around example problems. Because Army training typically involves the use of simulations, we represent these example problems as scenarios which simulations utilize. The student performance with the simulation becomes his attempt at solving the example problem represented by the scenario. We applied the Artificial Intelligence AI technique of Case-Based Reasoning CBR to capture and represent the example problems or cases and provide explanations to students on problem solving techniques. The system is sensitive to a students knowledge of problem solving principles and his performance and tailors teaching sessions accordingly. The body of knowledge contained in the system can be expanded over time simply through addition of more problems.
