Abstract:

We have demonstrated the use of a near-field scanning acoustic microscope in a noncontact mode using electrostriction to generate acoustic waves from a subwavelength dimension spot. Noncontact images have been obtained using the electrostrictive acoustic signal as the sole feedback signal. 5 micrometer lateral resolution in this mode has been demonstrated using 11 micrometer acoustic wavelength. Due to the nonlinear force interaction between the tip and the sample, frequency doubling is observed in the electrostrictive mode. During imaging, the tip and sample are excited by an rf signal at 350 MHz and the image is composed of a signal at 700 MHz.
