A power plant building was constructed in 1990 at an over-the-horizon radar site in Gakona, Alaska. Since it was built on permafrost, thermal protection between the building and the underlying permafrost was included in the design, which included rigid board insulation and hybrid thermosyphons placed in the gravel fill under the building. Soil temperature is monitored with eight thermistor strings placed under and at the building perimeter. This manual describes the steps that must be taken to ensure foundation stability, including directions on when to use the thermosyphons in the active, mechanical refrigeration mode. A data acquisition system using a computer-controlled datalogger is described. Datalogger, Insulation, Thermosyphons, Foundations, Permafrost, Hybrid thermosyphons, Thermistors.
