Abstract:

In this work a variety of novel films were produced. The films consisted of DNA complexed with the platinum compounds bipyPten and cis-diamminedichloroplatinumII as well as netropsin and daunomycin. Other films were made of either DNA or hyaluronic acid HA with different metallic counterions. These films were studied in order to determine if the films had enhanced optical or acoustical properties. Optical, third harmonic and second harmonic generation were observed from DNA, DNAbipy, and DNAnetropsin films. An optical anomaly was also observed at the A-to-B transition in CsDNA. Enhanced acoustic properties were found in Li- and NaHA both samples have a speed of sound of about 5 kms at low relative humidity RH. This stiffness appears to be related to the strong Coulombic bonding involving the metallic counterions. The HA films also display a phase transition in the vicinity of 88 RH, as revealed by Brillouin and Raman spectroscopy, infrared absorption, ultraviolet absorption and optical polarizabilities. Films of DNA complexes also show enhanced acoustical properties. In particular, DNAnetropsin films show a dramatic stiffening of the bonding holding the two helices together.
