A Characterization of the Deformation Behavior of the Cr2Nb Ordered Intermetallic System

The mechanical deformation behavior of two Cr2Nb ordered intermetallics was studied up to 1400 deg C. Cr2Nb and Cr2Nb,V have been shown to be potential candidates as high temperature structural materials. Micro- indentation has been utilized to investigate the static and time dependent deformation of these compounds. The micro-indentation hardness values over the temperature range of 25 to 1400 deg C indicate that these compounds possess greater strength than nickel based superalloys and other ordered intermetallic compounds that have been more widely studied. Both compounds were shown to possess excellent intrinsic resistance to creep deformation. Furthermore, small additions of Vanadium to the Cr2Nb compound has been shown to result in solid solution softening and an increase in the effective fracture toughness of the Cr2Nb,V compound. Additional investigation of these systems is warranted, and directions for continued study are discussed.
