The goal of this project was to design and test strain gages based on attenuation of positrons emitted in the radioactive decay of neutron-poor nuclides. This new type of strain gage has the advantages of conventional mounted gages, but with a much higher temperature range, no adherence problems, and no electrical or fiber-optic connections. This type of wireless gage would be ideal for advanced, high-temperature turbine engines, and particularly for rotating parts.
