We wish to develop a scheme that will enable us to predict the nearfield that results from the interaction of a submerged object with a guided wave for a general object in a general waveguide. The method will be based on the extended boundary condition EBC method T-matrix of Waterman and a new normal mode method that allows one to decompose the normal-mode solutions into a spherical representation suitable for operating on the spherical tensors that arise from the T-matrix method. Of particular importance is the fact that the resulting formulation allows one to couple the resulting near-field solution to an outgoing normal mode series that leads to the general waveguide solution.
