Abstract:

The Department of Defense adopted a new acquisition strategy in the early 1990s. This strategy seeks to preserve the technology base while deferring decisions with regard to the acquisition of military systems until specific threats, roles, missions, and functions requiring new technology have been identified. As part of this strategy, DoD has enumerated eleven specific areas of science and technology which contains special technical challenges on the critical paths of future technology developments of major significance to DoD. Known as DoD Critical Technologies, these include the following 1 Computers 2 Software 3 Sensors 4 Communications Networking 5 Electronic Devices 6 Environmental Effects 7 Materials and Processes 8 Energy Storage 9 Propulsion and Energy Conversion 10 Design Automation and 11 Human System Interfaces.
