Abstract:

This paper presents the results of an experiment in rewriting four FORTRAN programs in the Ada computer language. We counted and compared the numbers of lines of code in both languages. We found Ada programs to be larger than their functionally equivalent FORTRAN counterparts. However, we observed that the overhead for Ada diminishes as the program size is increased. Our limited data suggested that there may even be a cross-over point beyond which the size of an Ada program is smaller than a functionally equivalent FORTRAN program.
