An Analysis of FM Jamming and Noise Quality Measures

This thesis provides a description of FM-by-noise jamming, both at RF and at the output of the radar receiver, in terms of spectra, time-domain waveforms, and univariate probability density of amplitude. Particular emphasis is given to the case where the peak frequency deviation of the FM modulator is sufficiently small that Woodwards Theorem does not provide a good approximation of the RF spectrum. Additionally, noise quality measures which have been used to measure noise quality of radar jammers are considered theoretically and experimentally, and it is concluded that a noise measure which incorporates both a spectral measure and a probability density measure should be adopted. One such measure is proposed here. Lastly, a technique for measuring the noise quality of an operational jammer is demonstrated and the programs necessary to measure noise quality of an operational jammer are included here.
