A Nighttime Structure Model of Atmospheric Optical Turbulence, C2 sub n, Derived from Thermosonde and High Resolution Rawinsonde Measurements

Data from fifteen thermosonde flights was used to develop a simple a simple nighttime structure model of C2 sub n. High resolution rawinsondes provide fine scale estimates of atmospheric temperature gradients and variances of wind speed. Non-linear regression applied between the thermosonde and rawinsonde measurements provides the model C2 sub n estimator. This quasi- empirical model is based upon the theoretical description given by Tatarski and upon an exponentially scaled estimate of a theoretical model of the eddy dissipation rate given by Weinstock. A discussion of previous models and a comparison with the Dewan et al. microshear model is presented. Model profiles computed for other sites and seasons are compared favorably to related thermosonde profiles.
