The researcher had many publications and refereed journals under this grant. Kohn worked with G. Allaire on numerical shape optimization for minimum compliance in plane stress. This work makes use of a relaxed formulation. seeking an optimal design made from perforated composite materials. The latter surveys recent progress on optimal bounds. Topics addressed include the optimal energy bounds for elastic composites proved using the Hashin-Shtrikman principle, and optimal bounds on the effective moduli of polycrystals proven by means of the translation method.
