Abstract:

This report discusses research issues identified by two National Research Council studies on human performance models and proposes a new approach to model development, called the method of successive approximation, to address these issues. Successive approximation is an incremental approach to human performance process model development. During each increment of development, a complete human performance model is built. Initial models, however, are limited in the behavior they can represent. Subsequent iterations of development extend the behavioral repertoire by increasing the resolution of the human performance model. In addition, the report discusses issues of psychological reality as they relate to human performance models.
