Abstract:

A new procedure is developed for calculating light scattering from a spherical particle on a conducting plane. The discussion is limited to problems in which the incident light beam is perpendicular to the plane. A general proof is given for the method of images, which is used to convert the problem of a particle on a conducting plane to an equivalent two-particle problem is then obtained by the multipole expansion method. Mirror symmetry is exploited to simplify the calculation. Formulas are developed for the extinction and absorption cross sections. Several example problems are calculated, and the exact solutions are compared to the results from two commonly used approximation procedures
