A January 1988 survey of forty top defense contractors by the CALS industry Steering Group resulted in the following observations about the current environment for managing weapon system technical data 1 Significant investments have been made in computer-aided technology however, less than 20 of the companies are more than 50 automated, complete automation is projected to be ten years away, most companies use multiple vendor systems 2 Virtually all contractors have some capability to deliver digital data to the government, but only a small percentage is actually delivered digitally 3 Most companies have or plan to have at least partial digital interface with suppliers 4 Most companies are considering the development of a common shared database using relational technology and 5 Although a high percentage of the contractors support current standards, advances are needed in most of the major technical areas.
