Abstract:

Widespread use of computer-aided design and engineering CADCAE has created a new environment where product description data is becoming available in digital form to support a wide range of DoD and Industry applications. CALS is a DoD and Industry initiative to enable and accelerate the use and integration of this digital technical information for weapon system acquisition, design, manufacture and support. Through management of the CALS program, a comprehensive strategy has been developed to facilitate the transition from the current paper-intensive mode of operations to a highly automated and integrated mode, thereby substantially improving productivity and quality of the weapon system acquisition and logistics support process. Implementation of CALS is underway and is already leading to a major impact on the way DoD and Industry conduct business
