Phosphazenes comprise a broad range of cyclic or linear small- molecules and high polymers that occupy and important place in the chemistry of heterocyclic compounds and new macromolecules. Typical structures are shown in Table 7.1. In these molecules the side groups, R, attached to phosphorus can vary broad range, from halogen or pseudohalogen units such as fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, cyano, or isothiocyano, to simple or complex organic groups such alkoxy-, arylox-, amino-, alkyl-, aryl-, sugar units, amino acid ester groups, oligopeptides, transition metal complexes, porphyrins, phthalocyanines, organosilicon units, liquid crystalline, nonlinear optical, and photosensitive side groups, and a whole range of biologically active side groups.
