Magnetic Field Measurements of the CEBAF (NIST) Wiggler Using the Pulsed Wire Method

The Free Electron Laser FEL has proven to be a versatile photon source for many applications in science, industry and defense. It is capable of providing wide tunability and high efficiency, but has yet to yield high average power required as a weapon system. The proposed infrared and ultraviolet FELs at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility CEBAF have been projected to provide high average power. The first section of this thesis will study the necessity of a FEL for shipboard defense, and state the advantages over other defense systems. The remainder will focus on use of the pulsed wire method for measuring the magnetic field errors of the CEBAFNational Institute of Science and Technology NIST wiggler. Data analysis indicates the wiggler will have a net electron beam deflection of x5.2mm, which is much greater than the electron beam radius of re0.4mm and the optical mode waist of wo1mm.
