Abstract:

Results of a comprehensive, integrated geophysical investigation of eleven suspected Solid Waste Management Units SWMUs at Dugway Proving Ground DPG, Utah, are presented. DPG has been in operation since 1942 and was originally established for chemical and biological warfare testing. As a result of this activity, chemically and biological contaminated materials were generated and disposed of at the installation. Based on historical and visual information, eleven sites containing suspected SWMUs, were selected to be examined in greater detail using geophysical methods. The geophysical investigations conducted at each site were designed to detect anomalous conditions indicative of past disposal activities. The geophysical program included electromagnetic EM and magnetic methods. The geophysical investigation indicated five sites with anomalous results. The anomalous results may have been caused by physical or chemical soil changes as a result of disposal activities.
