Scaling Laws for Diffraction Loading by Air Blast (Schalingswetten voor Diffractie bij Schokbelastingen)

The assessment of the damage, which is done to structures by an explosion, depends both on the blast loading and the structural response. In the past scaling laws were developed for the description of simple blast loadings, thus eliminating the need for full-scale experiments. The aim of this work is to construct an approximate scaling law for complex blast loadings. The blast loading on a model of a shelter was studied in the 4Ox4O sq. cm blast simulator of the TNO Prins Maurits Laboratory. The density distribution around the model was determined by means of flow visualization with a shearing interferometer. An approximate scaling law, which eliminates the dependency on the shock strength, is proposed for the time behaviour of the blast loading. The scaling law is confirmed by measurements of the density at various locations on the model, for shock strengths of 6.5 kPa and 33.2 kPa.
