Abstract:

An investigation on the feasibility of improving SPATE signals by surface coating has been carried out. Several substratecoating combinations were considered in a mathematical model simulating constant strain amplitude cyclic loading conditions. It was found that it is possible to intensify the thermal emission of materials commonly used in SPATE analysis, such as mild steel and aluminium by coating with a material of improved thermoelastic properties. However, practical concerns such as cost, structural integrity of the coating under cyclic loading and the effects of the coating process on the internal stress state of the specimen need to be further investigated.
