Failure Analyses of M3A1 Baseplate for 81-mm Mortar 252

A metallurgical evaluation of a failed 81-mm M3Al mortar baseplate was undertaken. The evaluation consisted of the following analyses visual dye penetrant, scanning electron microscopyelectron dispersive spectroscopy, chemical metallographic, 2nd mechanical property. The investigation concluded the there was no evidence of a defective material condition and that the probable mode of failure was a ductile, fast fracture under high load.
