This report describes the work done by the author to develop an eddy current system to inspect the inside diameter surface of gun tubes. The report begins by explaining the basic theory of eddy current inspection. Next, the experimental work, which was done to test the feasibility of using this test method for gun tube inspection, is described. Finally, the system, which was developed as a result of this experimental work, is described in detail. The system is capable of automatically performing inside diameter surface inspection of a gun tube in less than five minutes and is currently being tested as a replacement for the pre-swage magnetic particle inspection of gun tubes.
