Acquisition of the decision-making skills which are the key to most management jobs is commonly believed to result from experience rather than formal training. While procedures, techniques and formulas can be explained and demonstrated to a trainee, it is unlikely that he will be able to apply them without practical experience. This project addressed this problem by developing an experimental training system, the PACific Air Forces Crisis Action System EXecutive TRAining System PACEXTRA. PACEXTRA provides individual crisis action executive trainees exercises, and intellectual and coordinative tasks, conducted interactively on a microcomputer. PACEXTRA presents the trainee with incoming messages, phone calls, and visits from staff members. PACEXTRA permits trainees to respond with messages, phone calls and tasking of staff members. Trainees are provided varied levels of assistance and prompts, including advice and feedback on actions to be taken as a result of events. A significant feature of PACEXTRA is a built in authoring system which allows individual crisis action team subject-matter experts to create and revise training exercises through a graphical user friendly interface. PACEXTRA exemplifies an economical and efficient means to provide exercise-based individualized training.
