Abstract:

The art of defense lies not only in the knowledge of ones own capabilities, but in the knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of ones opponent. In todays complex and fast-changing world, only the most sophisticated systems for the communication of defense information allow sufficient flexibility, sensitivity and real-time capability to guarantee accurate and timely responses. The systems must function both in peacetime to foresee and forestall potential conflicts, and in times of crisis to minimize damage and restore equilibrium as quickly as possible. Alcatel, with us its unique breadth of competence in the field of telecommunications, is able to fulfill all the needs of defense communications, from battlefield telephone links to synthetic aperture radars that scan the surface of the Earth from satellites to provide detailed strategic information. We have tried to touch on most aspects of defense communications. There are articles both on communication satellite systems and on observation satellite systems. Infrastructure satellite systems and on observation satellite systems. Infrastructure and tactical switches, as well as tactical network technology are covered. Radio propagation systems include microwave links, tropospheric scatter and mobile radio.
