Large number of infrared IR decoy flares, which are used to counter IR missile threats, have been expended during past training exercises of Naval combat pilots. In an effort to maintain a current level of training using the most cost-effective manner, a low cost training simulator was desired. The deployment of relatively low cost simulators in place of decoy flares during training exercises will be a savings of nearly 50 of the cost of the expendable used. Simulator, Tactical Use, Flare STUF has been developed by Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center NAVSURFWARCENDIV Crane for use as a training substitution for decoy flares. The purpose of this round is complete visual simulation of an expendable decoy flare. A complete review of the design phase, design optimization, and engineering tests of the STUF round at NAVSURFWARCENDIV Crane will be presented.
