Abstract:

Respiratory insufficiency is caused by numerous physiological aberrations, some of which can be treated by mechanical ventilatory support.. This paper presents the more common forms of mechanical ventilatory support with the adjuncts of PEEP and CPAP. Physiological effects of positive pressure ventilation are explained with emphasis on major organ systems. This paper concludes with a discussion of the clinical nurse specialists role in providing care for the patient who is mechanically ventilated.
