Abstract:

As we transition to the 90s, the tasks of the Army Topographic Surveyor will remain the same - provide control, layout construction, etc. His tools will change. The Automated Integrated Survey Instrument AISI will be a total station survey instrument replacing some of the old survey tools. AISI will speed up the tedious task of data logging. Global Positioning System GPS will be added to the Army Topographic Surveyors tool box. GPS will not replace existing instruments but will supplement those already used by the surveyor. If not limited by natural surroundings or man-made surroundingss GPS will be used to perform the long legs of control extension. The Army Topographic Battalions have invested their own money in the future by purchasing commercial total stations and GPS receivers. Informal training to support this move in the future has been conducted by USAETL. A training base needs to be established.
