Does FMFM 1-1 Provide Adequate Guidance to Understand Campaign Planning?

This monograph examines the Marine Corps current doctrine for campaign planning. The collapse of the Soviet government and the ongoing dispute over the control of the former Soviet military alters how the United States military will conduct campaign planning for the next conflict. The plan to reduce the United States military by 25 regenerates the call for joint warfighting doctrine. The first step toward a common warfighting doctrine must be how to plan the employment of all the capabilities of this nations military power, not just a single service. This research attempts to define which tenets of campaign planning are required for unity of effort in future conflicts. The monograph compares the current ten tenets of campaign planning as established by the Joint Chiefs of Staff JCS TEST PUB 3-0 to the tenets described in Fleet Marine Field Manual 1-1, FMFM 1-1. To validate the ten tenets of JCS TEST PUB 3-0, two major Pacific campaign plans of World War II are researched.
