This report provides a brief summary of the principal results obtained in a research program on the mechanics of progressive cracking in ceramic matrix composites and laminates. The report concentrates on 1 progressive transverse matrix cracking in cross-ply laminates, 2 the effect of transverse matrix cracks on the axial response of unidirectional ceramic matrix composites, 3 thermal conductivities of hot pressed SiCBN composites, 4 microcracking in polycrystalline ceramics. and 5 the effect of matrix cracking and fiber-matrix interfacial debonding on the response of unidirectional ceramic matrix composites.
