Abstract:

This report evaluates the Bonnet Carrel Spillway Structure from the standpoint of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. The natural, prehistoric, and historic settings of the spillway are described, followed by a chapter detailing the evolution of flood control efforts in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Items discussed include the development of the levee system the assertion of federal control the investigations of Charles Ellet and of Humphreys and Abbot the 1879 formation of the Mississippi River Commission MRC evolving revetment technology and the push for spillways .
