Abstract:

The duration of the mode-locked CO2 laser pulses was measured to be 0.9 or - nsec by the technique of second harmonic autocorrelation. Knowing the pulse duration, the spot size, and the harmonic conversion efficiency, a detailed fit of experiment to theory gave an estimate of the nonlinear coefficient of AgGaSe2. d36 31 or - V1, in agreement with the most accurate literature values. A number of experiments were made with longer pulse trains in which the highest harmonic energy conversion reached 78. The damage threshold was measured and it turned out to be related much more strongly to fluence than intensity. The shorter pulse trains had peak intensities of close to 300 MW 1cm squared whereas the longer trains 3 usec had intensities up to 40 MW 1cm squared.
