Design and Implementation of a Data Model for the NPS ARGOS Project

Pagination or Media Count:
The ARGOS project is a design and an implementation of a prototype multimedia database system developed as both a Battle Group Commanders assessment tool and a shipboard data management tool. The original prototype was developed using the HyperCardMacintosh technology, taking advantage of its object-oriented properties and its user-friendly graphical interface. The major problem with the current implementation if that all information is located in a relatively slow and inefficient database. Updates of information have to be hard-coded and access to other databases in or outside the current working environment is not supported. This thesis proposes an enhanced system taking advantage of relational database management technique. The proposed system is based on the idea that all information, including images, button locations, and other system variables, shall be accessed from the relational database management system. This approach makes it possible to separate the user interface from the stored data thus providing a platform independent environment. The enhanced system is developed using Oracle as the relational database management system. The user interface is built in Hypercard on the Macintosh. All data retrieval is based on ANSI SQL.
