Acoustic Bloch Wave Propagation in a Periodic Waveguide

The propagation of linear, dissipative acoustic Bloch waves in a periodic waveguide is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The waveguide under study is a rigid, fluid-filled, rectangular waveguide that is loaded with a periodic array of rigidly terminated rectangular side branches. Conditions for the existence of Bloch waves in the periodic waveguide are presented. Analytic expressions for the dispersion relation, the impedance function, and the Bloch wave function are derived. Measurements verify the predicted passbandstopband structure of the dispersion relation and show good agreement with the theory.
