Abstract:
This report summarizes a collection of laboratory ultrasonic modeling findings on transient liquidsolid seismo-acoustic wave phenomena. The topics covered include 1horizontal refraction of flexural waves by trapped gas pockets underneath floating plate, 2 wide-angle remote generation of broadband transient Scholte waves at liquidsolid interfaces from conversion of underwater acoustic waves by abrupt liquid discontinuities, steep topographic features, and adjacent immersed elastic solids, 3 characteristics of multiple transient leaky Rayleigh wave components in shallow water, 4 effect of water loading on edge waves along apex of immersed acute-angle solid wedge, and 5 on group velocity of medium frequency transient longitudinal waves in thick elastic waveguides. The findings pertain to Arctic underwater acoustics, ice mechanics, geophysical exploration, material characterization, nondestructive testing, and acoustic sensors.
