Abstract:

Toxicity of Technical Grade Tetraglycine Hydroperiodide TGHP, the active ingredient in a military water purification tablet MIL-W-283 has been completed. TGHP is moderately toxic by ingestion when prepared as a aqueous slurry. The compound has no potential for causing sensitization. However, TGHP did produce mild but reversible primary skin irritation, and the technical grade powder did cause severe and nonreversible injury to the eye. TFHP did not exhibit mutagenic activity in three of the four mutagenicity assays performed. In the Chromosome Aberration Assay, TGHP did produce a significant increase in chromosomal aberrations in CHO cells in the presence, but not in the absence, of metabolic activation. This single positive finding in the Chromosome Aberration Assay, in the presence of metabolic activation, is not considered sufficient to classify TGHP a potential human-cell mutagen.
