Abstract:
We have performed in-situ x-ray diffraction measurements on an underpotentially deposited monolayer of Bismuth on Silver 111. The Biforms a two-dimensional nearly centered rectangular structure that is uniaxially commensurate with the Silver 111 surface. The Bi monolayer compresses uniaxially along the incommensurate direction. Neither the Bi structure nor its compressibility is affected by the presence or absence of chloride in the electrolyte. Initial crystallographic analysis reveals that the nearly centered atom is displaced by approximately 0.35A along the commensurate direction, and that the atomic disorder in the monolayer is anisotropic.
