Estimation of the Outer Sphere Contribution to the Activation Parameters for Homogeneous Electron Transfer Reactions Using the Mean Spherical Approximation

Estimation of the outer sphere contribution to the Gibbs energy and enthalpy of activation for homogeneous electron transfer is described on the basis of the mean spherical approximation MSA. It is shown that these quantities for spherical reactants are significantly smaller than those estimated by the Born continuum model. MSA estimates and experimental values of the activation enthalpy for the cobaltacenecobaltacenium cation redox couple are found to agree very well with one another. The assumptions used in applying the MSA in the present paper and in earlier work are discussed.
